(Day 3) - Day Tour, Art Deco Vintage Car Tour

The original town of Napier was levelled by a dramatic and devastating earthquake in 1931 but was completely rebuilt within a remarkable 2 year period in the contemporary style of the times; Art Deco. Relive the glamour and style of the jazz era with a luxurious vintage car tour.

You’ll be met by your driver, in Art Deco costume, who will provide a fascinating commentary as you are driven in style, through Napier and surrounding areas. You’ll learn about the earthquake that destroyed the city, hear stories of the people that led the rebuild, and discover the Art Deco style. En route you will stop in Ahuriri and visit one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand, the National Tobacco Company building. You’ll then step back in time as you drive through the residential suburb of Marewa, meaning ‘gift from the sea’ in Maori. This suburb was built entirely on land that rose from the sea in the 1931 earthquake and is filled with 1930s style homes.
You’ll return to the Art Deco Centre or your central Napier hotel filled with a new appreciation for the city and the people who survived New Zealand’s worst natural disaster in modern times.

(Day 4 to 6) - Tour Package, 3 Day Hawke's Bay Highlights Cycling Tour

The Heretaunga Plains in this coastal region are known in Maori lore as the “Land of a Hundred Pathways” and are crisscrossed by The Hawke’s Bay Trails – 200 kms of mostly off-road trails winding through vineyards, orchards, wetlands and forests where you’ll have a glass of wine and search for rare birds and wildlife.

Day 1: You’ll head out of Ahuriri to the Napier CBD, famed for its Art Deco style. Continue along the seafront lined with Norfolk Palm trees and pass through historic monuments. As you reach the Horseshoe Wetlands you’ll see kids fishing, boats unloading their catch, the Old Embankment Bridge and protected birdlife before reaching the coastal communities of Haumoana and Te Awanga. Here you can visit area wineries or perhaps the British Car Museum before rejoining the trail to Tuki Tuki River. Cycle through apple orchard and vineyard country to Havelock North where you will spend your first night. Distance: 50 kms/31 miles.

Day 2: Start the day with a visit to the renowned Birdwoods Gallery and Sweet Shop before enjoying a pleasant ride through flat farmland to the world acclaimed Ngatarawa Gimblett Gravels appellation. There’s much to enjoy as you spend some time visiting the some of the region’s finest wineries. Leaving the wineries behind you join the Tutaekuri River trail for the final stretch to your overnight stay in Taradale. Distance: 50 kms/31 miles.

Day 3: Spend the morning cycling the scenic Puketapu Loop – a real favorite with locals. It follows the Tutaekuri River passing classic Kiwi pubs, the historic Otatara Maori Pa site, wineries and chocolate factories. Joining the Ahuriri Estuary trail at the foothills of Poraiti you cycle through a unique wildlife sanctuary with many native and rare wading birds to be seen. Continue north to Bay view, where you can grab a cold drink and snack at the Snapper Café or visit Crab Farm Winery. Follow the coastal path to Westshore beach and back to Ahuriri.
